John 5:24
From Death to Life: The Guarantee of Eternal Security
Scripture Reading: John 5:24
Introduction: The Most Powerful Promise in Scripture
Praise the Lord, church!
If you are looking for a verse that contains the absolute core of the Gospel message—packed with divine revelation and ironclad security—look no further than John 5:24. Jesus sits the religious leaders down and makes a declaration that changes everything for the human soul.
Let's look closely at His exact words:
"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life."
This single sentence holds so much weight that we need to break it down phrase by phrase to truly grasp what our Savior is offering us.
1. The Divine Authority of the Word
Jesus begins with a powerful signature phrase: "Truly, truly, I say to you..."
Whenever Jesus repeats "truly" (or Amen, Amen in the original text), He isn't just trying to get their attention. He is establishing the highest ground of authority. This is an authority that flows directly from God the Father and is given entirely to the Son. Jesus isn't guessing; He is issuing a divine decree.
He then says, "...whoever hears my word..."
Think about who He was speaking to. He was talking to the Pharisees and religious elite—men who memorized the scriptures but missed the point. Jesus makes a staggering claim here: He is saying that His spoken, living words carry the exact same weight as the written Word of God.
The Sovereign Claim: Jesus is claiming full deity. He is telling the Jews that the entire Old Testament—the very scriptures they claimed to protect—is actually His own word. Every law, every prophet, and every scroll points directly to Him.
2. The Nature of True Faith
Jesus continues: "...and believes him who sent me..."
He exposes the hypocrisy of the religious leaders. They claimed to love God the Father, but they hated Jesus. Christ exposes the truth: if you do not believe in the Son, you don't actually believe in the Father. You cannot separate the Sender from the One who was sent.
And what is the immediate result of this belief? He says they "has eternal life."
Notice four undeniable facts about this gift:
It is endless: It is a quality of life that has no conclusion.
It is immediate: You don't get eternal life after you die; you possess it the very moment you put your faith in Christ.
It is exclusive: This life comes strictly from the Father through the Son.
It cannot be earned: No amount of human effort, good behavior, or religion can buy it. It is a gift of grace.
3. Absorbed Judgment at the Cross
Next, Jesus gives us the ultimate insurance policy for our souls: "He does not come into judgment [or condemnation]."
How can a holy God look at a broken, sinful human being and promise that they will never face judgment? Because of the substitution.
Every bit of condemnation, wrath, and punishment that you and I rightfully deserved for our sins was completely absorbed by Jesus Christ on the rugged cross of Calvary. He took our place. When you place your faith in His finished work and His resurrection, your judgment is settled. God will not judge the same sin twice—Jesus already paid the price in full.
4. The Instant Shift: Death to Life
Finally, Jesus describes the great miracle of salvation: "...but has passed from death to life."
What kind of death is He talking about? He isn't talking about your heart stopping; He is talking about spiritual death. Because of our fallen, sinful nature, human beings are naturally born separated from God. We were spiritually dead in our tracks.
But the moment you exercise faith in Christ, a supernatural transaction occurs:
And notice the grammar here: "has passed." It is past tense. It is not a slow, painful process over a period of years where you hope you've done enough to make it across the finish line. Salvation happens instantaneously the second a repentant sinner trusts in Jesus. You step instantly out of the graveyard of sin and into the kingdom of life.
Conclusion: Walking in Assurance
Church, we serve a God who doesn't leave our eternity up to chance. If you have heard His word and believed on Him, you have passed from death to life. You are secure, you are loved, and your judgment has been satisfied at the cross. Let that truth anchor your heart today.
