John 5:21
The Gift of Resurrection: From Spiritual Death to Eternal Life
Praise the Lord!
In John 5:21, we are given a powerful reminder of the divine authority held by Jesus Christ:
"For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will."
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated this miraculous power over death not just through words, but through undeniable actions. The Gospels record three specific moments where Jesus physically brought the dead back to life:
Jairus’ Daughter (Mark 5:35–43): Jesus raised a young girl from her deathbed, comforting her grieving parents.
The Widow’s Son (Luke 7:11–15): Filled with compassion, Jesus stopped a funeral procession in the town of Nain to restore a grieving widow's only son to life.
Lazarus (John 11:43–44): In one of His most profound miracles, Jesus called Lazarus out of the tomb after he had been dead for four whole days.
These miracles were clear, undeniable evidence that Jesus possesses ultimate power over physical death. But they also point to a deeper, spiritual truth: Every person born into this world is born spiritually dead, and it is only through God that we are given a new, vibrant spiritual life.
The Two Resurrections to Come
The Bible tells us that physical death is not the end of the human story. Scripture outlines two distinct future resurrections that every soul should be aware of.
1. The First Resurrection: The Return of Christ
When Jesus returns, those who have placed their faith in Him will experience a glorious awakening. As 1 Thessalonicians 4:16 beautifully describes:
"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first."
This is the First Resurrection. If we live and die in Christ, we have the firm hope that we will rise up to meet Him in the air when He returns, spending eternity in His presence.
2. The Second Resurrection: The Final Judgment
For those who do not share in the first resurrection, the Bible speaks of a final awakening described in Revelation 20:11–12:
"Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it... And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done."
This Second Resurrection is a sobering day of final judgment. All those who were not raised when Jesus came in the air will stand before the Almighty to be judged according to their deeds.
Are You Ready?
The ultimate question we must ask ourselves today is: Are you ready for Jesus' coming?
When He returns, He will take all those who belong to Him to be with Him forever. If you are "in Christ," you do not need to fear the final judgment, because your life is secure in His grace.
Let us close today in reflection and prayer, thanking God for the gift of life and the promise of eternity.
A Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I thank You for Your Word today. I commit this day into Your hands once again, O Master, and I pray for Your blessing upon it. Lord, we know and declare that You have the ultimate power to give life to those who are dead. We hold onto the beautiful promise that we will be resurrected when Jesus comes back again, even if we have passed away.
We commit our hearts, our lives, and our futures into Your hands. May we live every day ready for Your return.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
