John 5:23
The Ultimate Honor: Recognizing Christ’s Divinity
Scripture Reading: John 5:23, Matthew 11:27, Philippians 2:6-11
Introduction: A Call to Absolute Honor
Praise the Lord, brothers and sisters!
Today, we dive into a truth that stands as the bedrock of our Christian faith. In the Gospel of John 5:23, we are given a powerful, unmistakable command:
"That all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him."
Think about the weight of these words. Jesus is revealing the Father’s divine purpose. The Father has given the power to raise the dead to Jesus, and He has committed all judgment into the hands of our Lord. Why? So that humankind would honor Jesus exactly as they honor God the Father.
1. The Undivided Essence of God
This is a boundary that God does not cross for anyone else. Man should never give to a created being the worship, praise, and honor that belongs to the Almighty Creator alone. If Jesus were merely a good teacher, a profound prophet, or a holy man, this statement would be blasphemy.
Neither the Father nor the Son could ever desire this level of honor for Jesus unless the Son fully shares the essence, the nature, and the attributes of God.
The Blindness of the Critics
When Jesus walked this earth, the religious leaders—the Jews of that day—stumbled. They completely missed His divinity. They saw a man from Nazareth, but they could not see the Living God standing right in front of them.
Jesus looked at them and drew a line in the sand: If you do not honor Me, you are not honoring the God Jehovah whom you claim to worship.
In Matthew 11:27, Jesus boldly claims:
"All things have been handed over to me by my father, and no one knows the son, except the father, and no one knows the father, except through the son and those to whom the son chooses to reveal him."
You cannot bypass Jesus to get to God. He is not a roadblock; He is the only road.
2. From Slavery to Sonship
Jesus did not come to earth just to teach good morals; He came to bring us into a vibrant, deep, personal relationship with God the Father.
Before Christ: We were separated, drifting, and spiritually dead.
After Christ: When we receive Jesus into our lives, a supernatural adoption takes place. We become children of the Living God.
Through Christ, we are brought into direct fellowship with the Creator of the universe. Because of Jesus, we don’t have to pray to a distant, cold deity. We can look up to heaven, just as the Scriptures say, and cry out, "Abba, Father!" We can confidently say, "Our Father in heaven."
3. He Placed No Limit on His Dignity
How is this possible? Because of who Jesus is in eternity. Look at Philippians 2:6. It tells us that Jesus, “being in the form of God, did not think it robbery to be equal with God.”
The Co-Equal Trinity
In nature, power, and attribute, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are perfectly equal. This divine equality is not a title Jesus had to violently grasp or steal, nor is it something He could ever truly cast away. It is who He inherently is.
Yet, knowing His supreme worth, look at what He did for you and me. Philippians 2:8 reveals the depth of His love: “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross.”
He left the majesty of heaven, clothed Himself in human flesh, and walked standard paths of humility—all the way to a brutal cross—so that we could be saved.
Conclusion: Every Knee Will Bow
Because of His perfect obedience, the story doesn't end at the cross. The grave is empty!
Therefore, God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name. The decree has already gone forth: at the name of Jesus, every single knee must bow—in heaven, on earth, and under the earth—and every tongue must confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father! Amen!
The Bible shows us beautifully, from Genesis to Revelation, that Jesus is God. Let us live lives that reflect that ultimate honor today.
Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for Your Holy Word today. Our eyes are opened clearly to the majesty of Your setup. We see that we must honor You by honoring Your Son, because Jesus, You are God.
We repent for the times we have made You small in our minds. Today, we commit ourselves fresh into Your hands, vowing to honor Your holy name in everything we say and do.
In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
God bless you all!
