John 5:28-29
The Voice That Wakes the Dead
Introduction: Do Not Marvel
Praise the Lord, church.
Today, we are diving into a profound truth spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of John 5:28-29:
"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation."
Jesus looks at the crowds who were astonished by His miracles and says, "Do not marvel at these things." He is telling them—and He is telling us today—that what we see in the present is only a glimpse. Greater things are coming in the future. The ultimate display of God’s power is not just healing a sick body today, but raising a dead body for eternity.
1. The Call and the First Resurrection
There is a day coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice. But the Scripture shows us that this happens in a divine order.
The Apostle Paul gives us a glorious glimpse of what we call the First Resurrection in 1 Thessalonicians 4:16:
"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first."
Imagine that moment! The voice of the Son of God will pierce through the soil of history. Every believer who has fallen asleep in Jesus will hear that shout.
2. From Perishable to Imperishable
You might ask, "How can a body that has returned to dust rise again?" Paul answers this beautiful mystery in 1 Corinthians 15:42-44. He compares our earthly bodies to seeds planted in the ground, waiting for a glorious harvest:
Church, we live in bodies that get sick, grow old, and break down. They are perishable and weak. But when Jesus calls our names, we will be raised in absolute power, glory, and immortality! We will receive a body fit for eternity.
3. The Two Destinies
But Jesus also gives us a solemn warning. There are two resurrections mentioned in John 5:
The Resurrection of Life: For those who have done good—those whose lives were transformed by faith in Christ.
The Resurrection of Judgment (Condemnation): For those who have rejected God's grace and done evil.
This is the ultimate reality of human existence. Death is not the end; it is merely a doorway. Every single soul will live forever—the question is where.
Conclusion & Prayer
Our eternal destiny hinges on one critical thing: Is your name written in the Lamb's Book of Life? If our names are not there, the Bible warns of a tragic end in the lake of fire. But if we are found in Him, we have the promise of eternal life.
Let us bow our heads in prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for Your powerful Word today. We thank You for the blessed hope that one day we are going to rise up again, free from pain and weakness, to be with You forever.
Lord, we pray today that each and every one of us will be found written in the Book of Life. Search our hearts, renew our spirits, and keep us faithful. We commit our lives, our bodies, and our souls into Your holy hands.
In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen.
God bless you, church!
