John 4:33
Praise the Lord! Today's verse is from John 4, 33,
so the disciples said to one another. Has anyone brought him something to eat?
Here, disciples were only thinking in carnal terms, whereas Jesus spoke almost exclusively in spiritual terms. No, no one has brought him any physical food to eat, but the Holy Spirit has brought him a spiritual meal.
Are we looking to the Lord to supply our needs or to men? That is why Jesus taught us to pray in the Lord's Prayer. Give us this day, our daily bread. A baby or a infant is dependent on his parents for everything for food, clothing, and shelter. So, are we dependent on God for all our needs?
So this petition deals with the needs of our physical frame. Greek word translated as bread not only represents food, but is also symbolic of all our physical needs.
To Martin Luther everything necessary for the preservation of life is bread and includes food, healthy body, good weather, house, wife, children, and a good government and peace. Here, the Lord is referring to the physical Necessities and not to luxuries if God so chose to bless us with all luxuries, it is purely by his good grace. Just as a loving human father wants to provide the needs for his children.
This petition is more than just a request for physical need, but it is a recognition of and an affirmation, that every good things we have comes from the hand of God, graciously given to us. James 1, 17. We can always be thankful for everything God provides. Our daily bread, the Necessities of our physical life, are all from God.
The heart of this petition is exposed in the word "give" because it recognizes the hand need of the petitioner. Even though God has already provided the Necessities, we ask him for it in recognition of his past and present provision, as well as the trust in the future supplying.
Prayer
Let us pray, Heavenly Father.
I thank you, Lord. You have taught us to pray, take care us today, given us our daily bread. Yes, we ask for all our needs today. Our Father, we commit this day to your hands in Jesus name, I pray. Amen. God bless you.
